Syrian Army, Resistance Advance in Syria's Zabadani

The Lebanese arena boils with talks on the Christian rift on Presidency, amid talks that the Free Patriotic Movement will take to the streets if the issue is not resolved before Thursday's cabinet session. Focusing on domestic matters, Lebanese newspapers also shed light on the advancements made by the Syrian army and the Lebanese resistance in al-Zabadani, which shares borders with Lebanon and has an important strategic location. Papers also did not fail to follow up on the nuclear talks in Vienna, with anticipation of a two-way outcome until this moment and no clear result so far, either deal or no deal.

Syrian Army, Hizbullah Advance in al-Zabadani, Decisive Battle --- AS-SAFIR

Hizbullah fighters and Syrian army forces have advanced into the city of al-Zabadani, southwestern Syria in the Damascus countryside, to liberate it from the terrorists operating in the area, following their control over several residential blocs in the al-Sultani neighborhood to the south.

Hizbullah and Syrian units also progressed on Sunday towards the triangle to the neighborhood of al-Huda Mosque.

According to As-Safir Lebanese daily, a well-informed source said that the entry of the Syrian army forces and the Hizbullah forces into al-Zabadani [which is a battle that had slowly begun four months ago] has been successful with less losses than expected.

Field sources, also according to the paper, said that the full control over the strategic city of al-Zabadani, which is adjacent to the Lebanese borders and the Beirut-Damascus International road will take place after the full cessation of gunfire and cutting off all support lines from which the terrorist groups benefit.

Another source told the paper that the al-Zabadani battle constitutes a turning point in the war against the Takfiri and terrorist groups, which will directly impact on the war with Takfiri movements.

Patriarch Rahi Urges Aoun to Refrain from Street Protests --- AN-NAHAR

Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi has reportedly urged Free Patriotic Movement chief MP Michel Aoun not to go ahead with his plans to resort to street action. Al-Rahi told Aoun during a telephone conversation that he is not in favor of street protests against the backdrop of the cabinet crisis, An-Nahar daily reported Monday.

Aoun said his party has begun preparations for street protests in Mount Lebanon and North Lebanon.

"The Christians in the Levant are being eliminated by the sword, and some want to eliminate us in politics," Aoun told supporters from South Lebanon at his Rabieh residence Saturday.

His planned action comes after the Cabinet, in its first session last Thursday in nearly a month, passed a decree, ignoring the issue of military and security appointments.

Prime Minister Tammam Salam has scheduled a Cabinet session for July 9 despite the conflict that erupted with the FPM's ministers after the government approved the allocation of $21 million to help export agricultural and industrial products by sea after the Nasib crossing on the Jordan-Syria border closed.

Berri: Aoun is a Man of the System --- AL-AKHBAR

Lebanese House Speaker Nabih Berri said on Monday that the "Head of the Free patriotic Movement Michel Aoun is a man [who backs] the system. "I don't think he will leave it to abuse," Berri said in remarks published in al-Akhbar newspaper.

Ain el-Tineh sources told al-Akhbar newspaper that Berri believes "there is no fundamental problem that pushes him [Aoun] to paralyze the institutions."

Aoun said his party has begun preparations for street protests in Mount Lebanon and North Lebanon.

FPM officials told several local dailies published on Monday that the movement will resort to "innovative techniques" during the protests. The FPM is fighting a "battle of existence," they said, adding that conventional measures to resolve the crisis are no longer implementable.

They stressed that "this is a battle of life or death for Christians."
