A British man was arrested in Warsaw after allegedly trying to rob a bank using prewritten notes because he could not speak Polish, local media reported.

The 33-year-old man approached the cashier at the bank in center of the Polish capital and produced a picture of gun he had drawn himself.

He then pulled out another card with: "This is a robbery. I have gun. Give me the money," written in Polish.

But the pictorial threat failed to have the desired effect on the bank employee.

"The cashier kept her head and told him to rejoin the queue," said Agnieszka Wlodarska from the Warsaw police. "She then called the police."

The man, who has not been named owing to reporting restrictions, apparently followed the cashier's instructions and sat down with other people waiting to be served.

"At no time did he speak and did not behave aggressively," added Wlodarska.

Responding promptly to the emergency call, the police arrived and arrested the Briton at the scene. The police reported that the man, who was unarmed, has pleaded guilty and has already been charged with attempted robbery.

Polish police have provided few details on the Briton, only saying he had lived in Germany for a year and had only been in Poland for a few hours before trying to rob the bank.

If found guilty, the failed robber could face up to 12 years behind bars.
