Rouhani Welcomes Imam Khamenei’s Support for Nuclear Deal

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the Leader of the Islamic Revolution His Eminence Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei's support for the international deal marks a "new chapter" in Iranian history.

Rouhani welcomed Thursday Imam Khamenei's expression of tentative support for a nuclear deal with world powers.

The Iranian president said the support from the Leader is a "stamp of approval for the results of the administration," with the deal heralding a new chapter of excellence for the Islamic Republic of Iran.

"The oppressive international economic, trade, and financial sanctions or the unilateral sanctions by the [UN] Security Council, European Union, and America against the Islamic Republic of Iran, have been eliminated," he said, according to a translation of his statement by Al-Monitor.

In the statement published on the president's website, Rouhani described Iran's nuclear deal with world powers including the United States as a "win-win."

"For the first time in the history of the United Nations, [nuclear] enrichment by a non-permanent member was directly accepted by the United Nations Security Council," he said.

The deal states that Iran will continue allowing international monitoring of its nuclear program and enrich uranium only at levels well below that needed to build a weapon in exchange for full sanctions relief from the US and European powers.

Iran had always maintained its nuclear program is exclusively for civilian purposes. By contrast, as its leaders have oft-pointed out, the US has actually used nuclear weapons, while the "Israeli" regime is known to possess them but allows no monitoring of its nuclear facilities.

Imam Khamenei praised the work of Rouhani's negotiating team in particular, but said any new international sanctions would likely force Tehran to abandon the nuclear deal.

"Any comments suggesting the sanctions structure will remain in place or [new] sanctions will be imposed, at any level and under any pretext, would be [considered by Iran] a violation of the deal," Imam Khamenei said in the letter to Rouhani.

He continued by stating the Iranian government would need to carefully monitor the implementation of the deal, including the rollback of sanctions.

"Lack of tight control could bring significant damage for the present and the future of the country," he said.
