An explosion hit military vehicles at an intersection in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Wednesday evening in what the military described as a terror attack.

According to official sources, twenty-eight people were killed, including civilians, and 61 others were injured in the incident.

The explosion hit three military vehicles and another private vehicle in central Ankara, near Turkish Parliament buildings. The targeted vehicles were stopped at a traffic light, the military said.

Meanwhile, Turkish authorities said they believe that a bomb-laden vehicle caused the explosion with security sources blaming both "ISIS" and militants from the banned Kurdistan Workers Party [PKK].

Although no group has claimed responsibility of the attack so far, Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan released a statement in which he stressed: "Our determination to respond in kind against such attacks against our unity and future from outside and inside is even more strengthened through such attacks."

He further noted that "Turkey will not hesitate to use its right to self-defense anytime, anywhere, and in all situations."

For its part, the US condemned the blast, with "National Security Council" spokesman Ned Price saying: "We stand together with Turkey, a NATO ally, a strong partner."

In addition, US War Secretary Ash Carter stated: "We strongly condemn this cowardly attack which appears to have targeted buses carrying Turkish military personnel. We stand with our Turkish allies in the face of this horrific act, which only strengthens our resolve to deepen our ongoing cooperation in the fight against terrorism."

In a separate development later on Wednesday, an explosion damaged a building housing a Turkish cultural center near the Swedish capital Stockholm, but nobody was injured.

However, it was not clear if the incident was linked to the Ankara blast.

The blast in Ankara and recent developments happened to be as Turkey steps up its intervention in neighboring Syria.
