The bloody attacks in Brussels were in the spotlight on Wednesday, making the headlines of all newspapers. Meanwhile, and as domestic politics witness a "downturn", the dailies followed up on the anticipated visit of the two international officials, UN Chief Ban Ki-moon and World Bank Group President Jim Tong Kim to Lebanon in which they should be discussing the Syrian refugees' crisis and ways to resolve the problem. But doubts remain that the international figures come with hope of keeping the more than one million Syrians in Lebanon through naturalization.
AS-SAFIR: Europe Realizes Syria, Iran, Hizbullah Only Path to Salvation
As-Safir's Sami Kleib wrote an analysis on Wednesday on the backdrop of the latest terrorist attacks in Brussels and its impact on the region, in which he shed light on the many angles of the crisis. Nevertheless, he stressed an important point that cannot go unnoticed.
Kleib writes "What [Syrian President Bashar] al-Assad and [Hizbullah Secretary General His Eminence Sayyed Hassan] Nasrallah know very well is that since the time terrorism has reached the heart of Europe, most recently demonstrated by the bloody attacks in the European Union capital Brussels, and earlier in Paris, there is no room for doubt that the West will slowly head towards further cooperation with Iran, the Syrian army and "Hizbullah", just like it is cooperating now with Russia."
The analyst stressed that "Iran, Syria and Hizbullah are now necessary passages to the West if it really wanted to hit terrorism hard."
He went on to say that "the West seems to have become closer to the Russian viewpoint, which says that [Syrian President Bashar] al-Assad Iran and Hizbullah are not the danger, but rather the heart of the solution."
A series of explosions claimed by the Daesh group ripped through Brussels airport and a metro train Tuesday, killing around 35 people and injuring around 300 in the latest attacks to bring bloody carnage to the heart of Europe.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said the blasts "show once more that terrorism knows no borders and threatens people all over the world", according to a Kremlin statement.
AL-AKHBAR: International Community Imposing Naturalization on Lebanon?
In the context of the UN official visit to Lebanon, al-Akhbar newspaper said that the International community seems to insist on its attempts to impose the naturalization of Syrian refugees in Lebanon through the "carrot and stick" policy.
The newspaper said that international organizations, topped by the UNHCR, are working hard to provide a long stay for the Syrian refugees or even are trying to naturalize their presence in neighboring Lebanon and Jordan.
The support to be provided by the international bodies will be conditioned with finding job opportunities for the Syrian refugees, in light of considering them as asylum seekers rather than displaced people who wait to go back home.
AL-JOMHOURIA: No Signs to Electing A President in Lebanon
Sources in Bkerke, Lebanon's Maronite Patriarchate told al-Jomhouria newspaper "there is no concrete sign that a president will be elected in April," adding "all the talks happening on the matter are not based on any facts."
The sources said that unfortunately, the presidential void is about to become two years old and there is no light at the end of the road signaling any hope that the crisis will be resolved.
Furthermore, Bkerke sources stressed that it sees the presidential impasse as directly related to crises outside Lebanon, especially the Syrian crisis.
"None of the ambassadors of officials to major players, especially the US and regional countries has an answer when this impasse will come to an end."
The Lebanese parliament failed on March 2 and for the 36th time in a row to elect a president to replace Michel Suleiman whose term ended on May 25, 2014. Speaker Berri postponed the election until today, March 23, 2016.
Since the term of President Michel Suleiman ended in May 2014, the Baabda Palace has been vacant.
