Daesh Threat Spikes in Brazil Ahead of the Olympics
Local Editor
The likelihood of Brazil becoming the target of terrorist attacks ahead of the Summer Olympics increased in recent months, the country's Counterterrorism Director Luiz Alberto Sallaberry said.
On Thursday, Sallaberry confirmed the authenticity of a Twitter profile in which a member of the Daesh [the Arabic acronym for the terrorist "ISIS" group] said that Brazil would be the next target of attacks.
The counterterrorism director stressed as cited by Globo TV on Thursday that the threat of terrorism increased in Brazil in recent months because the number of Brazilian nationals who accepted the extremist Daesh ideology has gone up.
In this regard, it was reported that Brazil decided to increase the number of foreign intelligence service members during the upcoming Olympic Games.
The Brazilian seaside city of Rio de Janeiro will host the Summer Olympic Games between August 5 and 21, 2016.
Daesh, a terrorist Takfiri group banned in a range of countries, is notorious for its brutal tactics, such as public beheadings and the stoning of women. It is known for its successful online propaganda and social media recruitment, which primarily target young people from around the world.
Relatively, the terrorist group claimed responsibility for a number of major terrorist attacks, including the ones in Brussels and Paris.
