Lebanese newspapers on Tuesday discussed several domestic and regional topics, focusing on the latest developments related to the presidential deadlock as Lebanon approaches its second year while the top Christian post in the country is still empty.
Also, the newspapers touched on the new crisis that hit more than a 100 families as Solidaire decides overnight not to renew the contracts of security guards. Also, the dailies touched on the Russian delegation currently in Lebanon, with the aim to provide maintenance and support to the Lebanese army as part of cooperation in combatting terrorism.
AL-JOMHOURIA: Russia Praises Lebanese Army Performance, Delegation for Maintenance Work in Lebanon
On the eve of the "Fifth International Security Conference" that kicked off on Monday, a high-ranking Russian military source praised the performance of the Lebanese army and its leadership in terms of combatting terrorism, and especially when it comes to keeping the eastern borders with Syria under control.
The source told al-Jomhouria newspaper "The Lebanese army and its head General Jean Qahwaji are major partners in fighting world terrorism, and their role in preventing the extension of Daesh to reach the Mediterranean will be a record in history, and will forever be remembered."
On a related note, al-Jomhouria newspaper came to know that the Head of the Lebanese army General Jean Qahwaji will head soon to Moscow in a visit that aims at enhancing the military capabilities of the Lebanese army, which comes in the context of combatting terrorism.
Also, the newspaper reported that a Russian technical military delegation is currently in Beirut, where its members are carrying out some maintenance works to Russian-made arms including canons and missile launchers in a step to enhance the readiness of the Lebanese army.
AS-SAFIR: Hariri Fails to Force Franjieh as President, French FM to Visit Lebanon with New Proposal
As-Safir newspaper on Tuesday reported that head of the Future Party MP Saad Hariri during his latest visit to Moscow, especially when he met the Russian President Vladimir Putin, tried to launch an international-regional campaign that aims at electing Head of the Marada party MP Suleiman Franjieh as President before the summer of 2016. According to the newspaper, Hariri tried to convince the Russian leadership to put pressure on the Syrian government and its Lebanese allies to elect Franjieh for presidency even if head of the Free Patriotic Movement ran for presidency too.
On a related note, the newspaper also reported that French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault is expected to visit Beirut in May, in a new effort to resolve Lebanon's presidential deadlock.
Ayrault will come to Lebanon on the 27th of May, bringing along a proposal that also includes the election of a Senate through the so-called Orthodox Gathering draft-law, said the report.
According to the Lebanese daily, the Senate's election was lately discussed by the ambassadors of the International Support Group for Lebanon, where one of the diplomats took the proposal to Paris.
This comes one month after French President Francois Hollande visited Lebanon on a two-day trip where he reiterated the importance of electing a president.
Since the term of President Michel Suleiman ended in May 2014, the top Christian post in the Baabda palace has been vacant.
AL-AKHBAR: Solidaire Leaves 100 Citizens Jobless Overnight
Al-Akhbar newspaper discussed a local crisis after 100 employees were kicked out of Solidaire without prior notice, by that leaving 100 families without salaries or food on the table. According to the newspaper, more than 100 security guards were informed by the security services company "Hook" one week ago that they have lost their jobs. The security company told the newspaper that the step comes after Hariri's Solidaire decided not to renew the contracts and sought another services company and so "Hook" was forced to let go over a hundred of its employees who were working for Solidaire through the company.
According to the paper, the crisis lies in the fact that most of these employees are above 50 years old, which makes it very difficult for them to find alternative jobs.
