DAILY SCOPE: More Daesh Affiliates in Lebanon Arrested, Saudi’s Making Up with Future Party?

Lebanese newspapers on Monday discussed the ongoing scenario of tension between the March 14 members, as the war of words continues between resigned Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi and Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq. The dailies touched on the meeting that joined Saudi Arabia's Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Assiri and al-Mashnouq on the backdrop of the latter's fierce statements on Saudi Arabia's policies towards Lebanon.

The newspapers also discussed the latest security developments in terms of the terrorist cells stopped in Lebanon that have been working for Daesh.

AN-NAHAR: Efforts to Arrest Daesh Affiliates in Lebanon Ongoing

Well-informed security sources told An-Nahar newspaper on Monday that "efforts are ongoing in the different Lebanese areas to arrest members belonging to the terrorist group Daesh, especially after the Lebanese army was able to dismantle a terrorist network in a qualitative operation.

Last week, Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk revealed for the first time that in the past three months security forces have been able to thwart three attempts by Daesh (ISIS) networks for surveying and plotting explosions.

AL-AKHBAR: Assiri Comforts al-Mashnouq after Firing Heated Statements on Saudi Arabia

Al-Akhbar daily reported on Monday that the Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Assiri and Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq had a two-hour meeting over the weekend, where the latter stated that he bears responsibility of his latest stances on Saudi Arabia.

According to high-ranking sources in the Future party, Assiri was very friendly with al-Mashnouq, takig into consideration what he called "the historic and solid relations between al-Mashnouq and Saudi Arabia.

Last week, al-Mashnouq hurled several heated statements in a televised interview during which he said that the decision to nominate Head of the Marada Party Suleiman Franjieh for the presidency was not ex-PM Saad Hariri's idea, but was rather the idea of the British Foreign Ministry, the Americans, and Saudi Arabia.
Late in 2015, Hariri launched a proposal to nominate Franjieh for the country's top Christian post. His initiative was however met with rejection and reservations from the country's main Christian parties. Lebanon has been without a president since May 2014 since the term of Michel Suleiman came to an end.

On another note, the newspaper said that the Lebanese army intelligence is carrying on with its efforts to dismantle the "Kherbet Dawoud Network" affiliated to the extremist group Daesh, after it succeeded in arresting three suspects last week and killed a fourth one during fire exchange.

According to security sources, investigations revealed that the members of the network are professionals in carrying out assassinations and were preparing to carry out security operations for the favor of the terrorist organization Daesh.

AS-SAFIR: Hariri-Saudi Arabia Relations Firm despite Clear Rifts?

A well-informed source assured that the relation between Head of the Future party Saad Hariri with Saudi Arabia is a firm one, and that the party is one of Saudi Arabia's fixed strategic pillars on which it depends. The sources went on to say that
"The Future party is part of the regional axis led by Saudi Arabia; those who think
that the party's coalition with this axis is shaky are mistaken."

"Our question to those who think as such is that do they think that Hariri can detach himself from the path that represents him, meaning Saudi Arabia?"

Hariri has enjoyed the backing of Saudi Arabia for years in exchange for acting as proxies for Riyadh's policies in Lebanon. But more recently, the Saudis seem to have been distancing themselves from the Hariris and the March 14 alliance.
