DAILY SCOPE: ’Israeli’ Espionage Device Dismantled, Daesh Members Arrested

Lebanese newspapers on Wednesday tackled different issues including the dismantling of an ‘Israeli' espionage device, arresting members of the Daesh [Arabic acronym for ISIS / ISIL] terrorist group being smuggled into Arsal and the electoral law which is still lingering in its place.

Newspapers also tackled other domestic and regional issues including the latest developments in Syria.

AS-SAFIR: Daesh "Smuggled" Members Arrested, Parliamentary Electoral Law Unresolved

A Lebanese army checkpoint stopped a Van vehicle in Arsal and arrested two people hiding in the vehicle, said As-Safir newspaper on Wednesday. The two, who belong to Daesh terrorist group were hiding in a "secret hide" inside the vehicle and were being smuggled into the outskirts of Arsal where the centers of the terrorist groups are located.

On this note, a security source told As-Safir newspaper that the Lebanese army has been carrying out very delicate monitoring to determine the path through which the mini-vans have been smuggling members of the terrorist groups.

As for the espionage device uncovered in Barouk, sources told the newspaper that it is part of the espionage system that was dismantled and uncovered earlier in Lebanon, assuring that this is an ongoing breach to the UN resolution 1701 and a violation to Lebanon's sovereignty.

A suspicious object was discovered in the Bekaa region on Tuesday, to later be identified as an espionage device. In 2009, a telecommunications station in the Barouk area of the Shouf was uncovered, triggering heated debate on the involvement of Israel in spying operations.

On another note, Head of the Parliament Nabih Berri expressed frustration at the joint committees inability to agree on a new parliamentary electoral law, and pointed out that some lawmakers seem to want to invoke the 1960 law in the coming polls, said the newspaper.

Berri was quoted by his visitors as saying that "The meetings of the joint committees to discuss the electoral law is in standstill and did not yield any results."

According to the paper, Berri stressed "it is very important to do the impossible and avoid returning to the 1960 law," and pointed out that he will discuss the issue during the national dialogue meeting which is due on June 21st, so that all assume their responsibilities."

AN-NAHAR: Daesh Preparing for Attacks on Lively Areas Downtown

Security sources told An-Nahar newspaper on Wednesday that several networks liked to Daesh have been preparing for terrorist acts in different Lebanese areas. According to the source, the pattern of the intended operations this time seemed different; the terrorist groups had chosen areas at the heart of the capital Beirut, which is packed with civilians and tourists, and are areas where restaurants and recreational centers are located.

There have been numerous confessions from the suspects on prospected assassinations of army personnel as well as terrorist explosions that were aimed at targeting populated areas. The bulk of confessions and the careful monitoring of the army allowed its intelligence to arrest new masterminds directly related to the terrorist group this week.

Lebanese forces are engaged in operations to stop Daesh spillover from the northern border with Syria. Last week, Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk revealed for the first time that in the past three months security forces have been able to thwart three attempts by Daesh networks for surveying and plotting explosions.

AL-AKHBAR: US Banking Sanctions Take Effect on Hospitals, Social Centers

Al-Akhbar newspaper said on Wednesday that the first American banking sanctions imposed on Hizbullah have targeted social institutes and medical centers.

The sources said that the banking accounts of several Hizbullah institutions including The Emdad Committee for Islamic Charity, the Martyr's Foundation and the St. George Hospital have been closed including hundreds or maybe thousands of other accounts.

On December 18, 2015, US President Barack Obama signed into law the so-called Hizbullah International Financing Prevention Act.

Earlier in May, Industry Minister Hussein al-Hajj Hassan of the Loyalty to the Resistance bloc warned at a cabinet meeting that "a red line has been crossed" when two Lebanese banks suspended three accounts of the party's MPs in conformity with a US sanctions law.
