Lebanese newspapers on Friday touched on the different domestic files, with focus on the pending presidential impasse and the terror threatening Sidon and Lebanon in general, as the terrorist group Daesh [Arabic acronym for "ISIS" / "ISIL"] is preparing for a large-scale plan to put its hand on the Palestinian camp of Ein al-Helweh and its surroundings.
The newspapers also discussed the several regional and international files witnessing development.
AS-SAFIR: Future Movement Admitting of Mistakes, Hariri to Accept Aoun for Presidency
As-Safir newspaper on Friday quoted a high-ranking figure in the March 14 camp as saying that "The March 14 camp and the Future party have committed four major mistakes in dealing with the presidential file as follows:
- Accepting this case as being solely a Christian affair in the first place
- Agreeing to limit the candidacy within the four Maronite poles
- Hariri's nominating of MP Suleiman Franjieh for presidency
- Geagea's nominating of MP Michel Aoun for presidency
The figure went onto say "every time, we thought that we were facilitating the finding of a solution to the crisis, but later found out that the exits we chose were similar to the ones on a highway, once you enter the exit you cannot come back to the highway except after losing a lot of time and energy and driving for a long distance."
Lebanon has been without a president since the term of Michel Suleiman ended in May 2014. Also, As-Safir reported that head of the Future party will soon agree on electing head of the Free Patriotic Movement MP Michel Aoun for the post of presidency. According to the paper, Hariri will agree on electing Aoun in a few weeks.
AL-BINAA: Daesh Wants to Put Its Hands on Ein Al-Helwe, Surroundings
Well-informed sources told al-Binaa newspaper on Friday that "A decision has been taken by the terrorist group Daesh to put its hand on the Palestinian refugee camp of Ein al-Helwe as a first stage to control the Palestinian factions living in these camps."
According to the sources, the organization has brought some 120 members who are capable of recruiting people from inside the camp, by that paving the way for taking over the camp completely.
The third phase of its plot would be extending its force outside the camp, by that reaching the coast and becoming able to move easily inside Sidon and then block the highway connecting the South to Beirut.
According to sources, the terrorist organization is facing two major obstacles: the first is the total rejection of some Palestinian factions to such a scenario and their readiness to confront Daesh even with arms and the rejection of the Palestinian people in general to see the camp turn into another Yarmouk camp, and the second is the enforcements and measures carried out by the Lebanese army to confront any terrorist act outside the Palestinian camp as well as the rejection of Sidon's people to Daesh's attempt to control their city.
This does not mean that Daesh will not think about carrying out its plot, but it means that these impediments will probably prevent the extremist organization from reaching its goals, said the source.
AL-JOMHOURIA: International Decision to Facilitate Presidential Elections in Lebanon
Lebanese Interior Minsiter Nouhad al-Mashnouq told al-Jomhouria newspaper on Friday that "there is a major international decision to facilitate the election of a president in Lebanon this year."
According to the paper, Mashnouq said, "We, as the Future bloc are adherent to nominating MP Suleiman Franjieh, but it is not enough that we believe in what we believe and sit in our homes and wait for fate, we should rather put in efforts to elect a president through understandings with other forces and parties in the country."
AL-AKHBAR: Secret Meeting to Find Electoral Law
For its part, al-Akhbar newspaper revealed that the Free patriotic Party and the Lebanese Forces held a secret meeting at the Foreign Affairs' Ministry two days ago, in which the two sides tackled the pending impasse in the country, in an attempt to find a common electoral law that would allow parliamentarian elections to take place.
According to the paper, attending the secret meeting were Minister Jebran Basil, MP Alan Aoun, MP George Odwan, MP Ibrahim Kenaan and head of the communication body in the Lebanese Forces Melhem Riyachi as well as a number of legal experts on the electoral law.
