Iranian President Hassan Rouhani was summoned on Tuesday to speak in front the parliament and answer questions about his role in the country’s ongoing economic woes as a new round of sanctions further constricts Tehran.

Rouhani’s first ever summoning by Iran’s lawmakers comes as the president faces growing pressure to change his governance and alleviate the economic difficulties associated with a deteriorating relationship with Trump’s United States.

Rouhani's question and answer session with parliament was broadcast live on state television.

The Iranian leader stated that under his authority, the Iranian government would show “the anti-Iranian officials in the White House” that their sanctions will not succeed in stifling Tehran.

“The economic problems are critical, but more important than that is that many people have lost their faith in the future of the Islamic Republic and are in doubt about its power,” Rouhani stated.

“We are not afraid of America or the economic problems,” he added. “We will overcome the troubles.”

Sanctions on Iran were lifted under a 2015 multilateral agreement sponsored by then US President Barack Obama but were recently re-imposed by President Donald Trump after he asserted that Iran has failed to keep its promise of abandoning its pursuit of nuclear weapons.
