Attorney General Won’t Postpone Netanyahu’s Indictment Decision until After Election
By Staff, Agencies
“Israeli” Attorney General Avichai Mendelblit said on Friday that no legal reason exists to prevent him from reaching a decision on recommending to indict Zionist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before the Zionist entity’s April 9 election.
His statement came in response to Netanyahu’s lawyers, who had asked to postpone the announcement of a decision in the criminal cases against Netanyahu until after the election.
“Suspending the regular work process, determined in advance, concerning the investigations in the matter of the prime minister until after the date of the election would be a violation of the principle of equality before the law,” Mendelblit wrote in a letter to Netanyahu's legal team.
He noted that such a delay would also deviate from past instructions from the attorney general.
“Waiting to release the decision is not in keeping with the public’s right to know,” he added.
Mendelblit said prosecutors were examining the materials for a long time before the election date was moved up, and the rules set in 2005 concerning investigations into elected officials during the period before elections state that no reason exists not to announce an intention to recommend an indictment, pursuant to a hearing, before an election – even if the hearing itself will not be held until after the election.
