Berri urges Feb. 14 Christians to meet with Aoun
Source: Al-Manar, 13-12-2007
Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri urged Christian leaders of the February 14 alliance to meet MP General Michel Aoun and discuss with him the presidential election crisis.
Berri expressed readiness to exert efforts "to speed up the presidential election process as soon as possible."
Aoun had lashed out at the unconstitutional government of Saniora and his minister of interior Hasan Sabaa whose term was marred by more a dozen assassinations. Not one of these cases was solved. "We have to know who is behind the ongoing obstruction especially that we were close to reaching an understanding to elect a president next Monday. We have doubts that those protecting us are the ones killing us. I do not want to limit my accusation to one side, however the circumstances of the crime lead us to believe that the this has been a protected crime."
Berri had received a telephone call from the head of the Democratic Gathering Walid Jumblat during which the two men exchanged views in the current situation and ways to get out of the presidential impasse. Berri earlier hailed Jumblat's stance in which he urged the opposition to meet February 14 "half-way" to elect a consensus president for Lebanon's sake. "The void is in no one's interest," Jumblat said.
