War won΄t stop Iran΄s nuclear program
Source: Presstv.ir, 7-11-2008
An "Israeli" political analyst says a military action against Iran will not stop Iran's nuclear program or even delay it significantly.
Dr. Emily Landau, director of the Arms Control and Regional Security Project at the Institute for National Security Studies says much of the talk of a strike on Iran is to pressure Iran to keep it thinking that "there is a credible threat there."
"The purpose of that is to get Iran to finally negotiate seriously," The Jerusalem Post quoted Landau as saying.
"Even if military action was used, it would ultimately have to lead to some kind of negotiation to get a deal," she said.
"Israeli" War Minister Ehud Barak has called on the White House not to rule out the military option for halting Iran's nuclear program.
In a meeting with visiting US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Friday, Barak said "Israel" is "convinced that Iran continues to try to build a nuclear weapon".
"We don't rule out any option. We recommend others don't rule out any option either," Ehud Barak said after the meeting with Rice.
"Israel" is the only possessor of nuclear weapons in the Middle East. It has not yet joined the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Iran is a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and a signatory to the NPT. Tehran has repeatedly declared that its nuclear program aims at developing no weapons.
