Lebanon registered 10 new coronavirus-related deaths and 1,093 cases Monday, as security forces increased protective measures in prisons across Lebanon.
Among the newly recorded cases, four were from incoming travelers from abroad, bringing the total number of positive cases to 147,613 since the virus was first detected in late February. The total number of deaths now stands at 1,210.
The relatively low cases were registered after a total of 6,901 PCR tests were administered in the last 24 hours. The positivity rate of the tests in the last two weeks stood at 12 percent, a significant decline from the unbudging 15 percent observed in prior weeks.
After a meeting with the emergency committee to increase alert status in prisons, the Internal Security Forces said in a statement that they will increase preventive measures in prisons especially with older inmates and those who have serious health conditions, as well as ensuring interrogations and court sessions are done through video conferencing.
As of Dec. 11, a total of 585 cases had been registered in Lebanon’s main prison in Roumieh, where conditions are dire and prisoners do not receive proper health care and live in overcrowded cells.
