"Israel": Stop PA elections at any cost
The Palestinian Authority elections should be prevented at any cost, even if it means a confrontation with the US, an official Israeli report suggests.
A war establishment paper which will be presented to ‘Israel's' cabinet next month as part of the National Security Council's annual situation assessment, fears that the new elections in the Palestinian Authority might lead to Hamas victory, thus it must be averted.
The assessment warns that the two sate solution might be taken off the table, once the term of Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas is over on January 9, 2009.
The two sate solution to the ‘Israeli'-Palestinian conflict has been under negotiation since a Middle East conference held in Annapolis in November 2007.
During the conference US President George W. Bush vowed that the Palestinian Authority and ‘Israel' would reach a permanent and comprehensive peace accord by the end of 2008. However, the two sides have failed to reach an agreement on the core issues of the Middle East conflict so far.
The report also recommended the regime to increase pressure on Hamas in the Gaza Strip saying "If the truce collapses and conflict is resumed in the Gaza Strip, ‘Israel' must act to topple Hamas' rule there."
Hamas defeated Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah faction in the January 2006 parliamentary elections and took control of the Gaza Strip shortly after its landslide victory.
Abbas dismissed the Hamas government and formed a Western-backed cabinet in the occupied West Bank after the Islamic movement took over the coastal Strip
'Israel' also stepped up pressure on the Palestinians in the territory, launching daily attacks on the populated area and imposing a crushing economic blockade against almost 1.5 million people in the costal strip.
