A Norwegian lawmaker nominated the Black Lives Matter [BLM] movement for the Nobel Peace Prize of 2021, the Guardian reported Friday.
The lawmaker, Petter Eide of the Socialist Left Party, credited the movement with forcing nations across the globe to come face to face with the racism within them.
"Black Lives Matter has become a very important worldwide movement to fight racial injustice," he said in his nomination referral, as cited by the newspaper.
“They have had a tremendous achievement in raising global awareness and consciousness about racial injustice,” he added.
On February 1, nominations will no longer be accepted, and in March, the prize panel will unveil the shortlist.
Starting from late spring 2020, the US was rocked by a tidal wave of protests after the death of George Floyd, an African American man, at the hands of the police during a brutal arrest.
The protests across the country at times turned violent and saw an "autonomous zone" controlled by demonstrators pop up in Seattle. The unrest spread globally, with rallies -- and, at times, clashes -- also taking place in Europe.
