At least eight "Israeli" soldiers have been wounded as projectiles fired from the Gaza Strip fell in an "Israeli" army base near the Strip.
"A barrage of mortar shells" rained down on the "Israeli" town of Nahal Uz, where two slammed into a nearby military base, injuring the soldiers, according to "Israeli" news agency Yedioth Ahronot.
One of the soldiers is said to have been seriously wounded.
A resistance group from the Gaza Strip, the Popular Resistance Committees, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was in retaliation for the deaths of its members by the Zionist regime.
"This is a response to the death of six of our members," a statement from the group said.
Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum confirmed that mortar fire by the Popular Resistance Committees had come in response to "Israeli" atrocities in the impoverished Strip.
"We have said from the beginning that any "Israeli" breach will be met with a response, and this was a response,'' Barhoum said.
Earlier on Friday "Israeli" troops backed by tanks mounted an incursion into the Gaza Strip, shelling the area, medics and witnesses said.
