The unconstitutional government of Fouad Saniora drafted on Monday a draft law for an amendment to elect army Chief Michel Sleiman as president. Information Minister in the unconstitutional government Ghazi Aridi said after a cabinet meeting that the government had prepared the legislation to amend the constitution "for a single time" to allow a senior public servant to become president. He said the draft law will be submitted to parliament for ratification.
Meanwhile, Parliament speaker Nabih Berri has already said he would not accept legislation from an illegitimate government since five cabinet members resigned last year. Lawmakers are set to meet on Saturday in the 11th bid to vote for a new head of state
The unconstitutional government also adopted a motion calling for an extraordinary legislative session by parliament as of January 1, to tackle the amendment bill.
