Iran's powerful Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani says some of the Obama Administration's measures against Iran have been 'disappointing.'

"Some approaches by new American administration have been a disappointment," Larijani told in a news conference in Tehran, adding that "time" will tell thier true intentions.

The lawmaker was referring to some of Obama's measures against the Islamic Republic, which did not conform with his campaign slogan of "change."

On Thursday, the democrat extended a set of sanctions against Iran for another year, over claims that Tehran is still a threat to US national security.

Obama has also vowed to begin direct talks with Iran to thaw relations between the two nations.

He has, however, made no concrete offer and his decision to restore the sanctions seems to undermine the US administrations' claim of a new rhetoric towards Iran.

Answering a question about the US proposal of a high-level international conference on Afghanistan, with Iran's presence Larijani said: "Iran plays an important role in the stability of the region and we doubtlessly take responsible approaches" towards the neighboring countries of Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Bush administration waged "Operation Enduring Freedom" on Afghanistan in 2001, to capture Osama bin Laden, and destroy al-Qaeda and Taliban.

The invasion of Afghanistan was also justified as part of the West's "war on drugs."

"The al-Qaeda network and the Taliban regime are funded in large part [by] the drugs trade," ex-British Prime Minister Tony Blair said in 2001 when confirming London's participation in the US attack on Afghanistan.

Eight years later, Afghanistan is the second biggest opium producer, supplying 90 percent of the world's illegal drugs trade, the UN's drugs monitoring body said on Wednesday.
