Chinese President Travelling to Moscow to Deepen Cooperation with Russia

Chinese President Xi Jinping travels to Moscow later on Wednesday for a significant three-day visit expected to boost the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership.

The visit takes place amid escalating trade tensions between China and the US due to stringent American tariffs.  

Xi’s visit, China’s official Xinhua news agency said, will “inject new momentum into the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership”.

He is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday. The two leaders are expected to sign numerous bilateral agreements strengthening the "two nations’ partnership".

“The upcoming visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Russia is one of the central events in Russian-Chinese relations this year,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said. 

The "summit will send an important signal to the international community about the common approaches of Russia and China in defending the post-war world order”, she added.

They are expected to discuss phase two of the Power of Siberia natural-gas pipeline, along with Ukraine and Russia-US relations. Beijing may be keen to export more consumer goods to Moscow to offset US tariffs amid a trade war with Washington.
