Brits Advised to Open Loft Hatches as 11-Day Warm Spell Sets In

By Staff, Agencies
As a mini-heatwave sweeps across England, residents are being encouraged to open their loft hatches to help regulate indoor temperatures and stay cool.
Forecasters predict up to 11 consecutive days of warm weather, with temperatures ranging from 22°C to 24°C—particularly peaking around London on May 13, 17, 19, 20 and 21.
With heat expected to accumulate in upper floors, experts suggest that opening the loft hatch can prevent homes from turning into ovens by allowing hot air to escape. This technique is especially helpful for multi-story homes where heat tends to rise and linger, making sleep uncomfortable during warmer nights.
Joanna O’Loan from the Energy Saving Trust shared her advice, noting that this strategy works best during cooler nighttime or early morning hours, when outdoor temperatures dip below those inside the home.
She also recommended longer-term investments such as improved insulation, which can keep homes cooler in summer and reduce energy usage in winter.
Apartment dwellers aren’t left out—experts suggest they can benefit from using fans and keeping internal doors open to help circulate air and draw in cooler breezes.
An expert from roofwindows4u.com added that while loft rooms offer great versatility—from bedrooms to home offices—they often struggle with temperature extremes.
They noted that many homeowners face discomfort from overheating in summer and chills in winter, emphasizing that better temperature regulation can improve comfort, sustainability and lower energy costs in the long term.
