As-Safir: Possible drift between Future Movement and Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya
21-4-2009
A source from Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya told As-Safir newspaper on Tuesday that they might break their alliance with the Future Movement in the upcoming parliamentary elections and said that "the decision was discussed in a meeting in the Jamaa's political bureau on Monday night."
The source said that his party's sacrifices were not appreciated, and it could not count on the promise for one seat in parliament, which was not necessarily guaranteed. The Jamaa refused to consider former MP Khaled al-Daher, who is running in Akkar, within its share of candidates and said it was consequently free to choose its electoral alliances.
The source added that in order for the Jamaa to regroup with the March 14 alliance, it should guarantee a second seat in parliament for the party.
A source from Future told As-Safir that the Jamaa's drift from the alliance meant the automatic withdrawal of Imad al-Hout, the Jamaa's candidate who was running with MP Saad Hariri in the Beirut III district, and would reconsider MP Ghinwa Jalloul for the same seat instead.
