Fneish: White House, Arab Money Cannot Affect Voters
Labor Minister Mohammad Fneish criticized on Friday the United States' warning against Hezbollah victory in the forthcoming parliamentary elections, saying that it was the best proof of the US biased policy in the region in general, and Lebanon in particular.
Speaking to Al-Manar, Fneish read in the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's warning a confirmation of what the national opposition has always been emphasizing, saying it was evidence the US aids were not for Lebanon as a whole but for a specific party against another.
Fneish said that Clinton's statement was another part of the US ongoing interference in the Lebanese affairs, adding that it aims at falsifying the public opinion. "The US administration's battle is not with Hizbullah but with a major part of the population represented by the national opposition," he said.
Yet, the Hizbullah minister told Al-Manar that such statements were secondary, emphasizing that the Lebanese voters could not be affected by them. He noted that the majority of Western countries have already taken the decision to deal with any post-election government, saying that the ambassadors of those countries have actually informed Hezbollah representations of these intentions.
Fneish also undermined the potential influence of electoral money in changing the electoral picture on the eve of the elections. While commenting the article published one day earlier in the US daily New York Times revealing that Saudi Arabia was arming its allies with huge amounts of electoral money, Fneish said that using electoral money was an attempt to support the "other party."
He recalled that the March 14 bloc was witnessing a complete collapse as a result of the conflicts that emerged over the formation of electoral lists here and there. "Thus, some are attempting to re-vivify the March 14 bloc through electoral money," he said, adding that they will fail.
"The Lebanese people, and no one else, will determine the identity of the next parliamentary majority," Fneish said, adding that neither the White House nor the money coming form the Arab countries could change anything.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed concern about a possible win by Hizbullah in the June 7 parliamentary elections. "We are currently supporting the Lebanese government, which has Hizbullah in it and we are doing that because on balance it is the interest of the US to back efforts against extremism," Clinton claimed in a testimony before a House appropriations subcommittee Thursday. Clinton also hinted that some flexibility might be needed, pointing to US funding for Lebanon.
