Syria advises UN to deal with "Israeli" spying cells discovered in Lebanon
Source: Kuna, 6-5-2009
The Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported on Wednesday that Syria said it was surprised to see its name still mentioned in a UN report on the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1559, even though it fully complied with its provisions and withdrew its troops from Lebanon in April 26, 2005.
The agency added that Syria's envoy Bashar Jaafari told UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon that the UN should instead be concerned about the discovery of three "Israeli" spy networks in Lebanon, which carried out several assassinations, according to preliminary investigations.
KUNA said that Syria's complaint was delivered in a letter to both the Secretary General and the President of the Security Council, Russia.
Jaafari said Ban should consider Syria's efforts to control the borders and assist Lebanese authorities, according to the agency.
He rejected as groundless and of no significance the UN's assertions that Syria is allowing smuggling and the flow of fighters from Syria into Lebanon, and said these allegations aim to distract attention from "Israel's" violations of Lebanese airspace, borders and waters on a daily basis.
He said that the Secretary-General and his special envoy, Terje Roed-Larsen, who demonstrated a lack of neutrality, should complete the implementation of Resolution 1559 by compelling "Israel" to cease its attacks and threats against Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He reiterated Syria's commitment to preserve Lebanon's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity and urged "other parties, such as the United States, which the reports of the special envoy have deliberately ignored, to end their interference in Lebanese domestic affairs.
He also advised the other parties not to intervene in the development of Syrian-Lebanese relations, because "to do so would detract from what has been accomplished."
The Security Council is scheduled to discuss the Secretary-General's report on Thursday.
