"The opposition entered the debate stage aiming to determine its position regarding its relationship with the 'March 14' group in terms of the formation of the new government", the Lebanese daily al-Akhbar reported today.

It added: "The past two days saw a series of meetings held, the most important were between political aide to the Secretary General of Hizbullah, Hajj Hussein Khalil, and Speaker Nabih Berri, General Michel Aoun, MPs Suleiman Franjieh and Talal Areslan, paving the way for new meetings, pending the opposition receiving a formal offer from the parliamentary majority regarding the form of their participation in the new government".

The daily said: "According to observers the stands taken by opposition leaderships regarding government are still focused on the prospects of political relations within the constitutional institutions. Existing ideas revolve around the guaranteenig one-third of Cabinet being a prerequisite to participation, or obtaining ministerial seats relative to the percentage of the opposition parliamentary representation, which coincided with the initial words transferred by MP Saad Hariri's envoy to Hizbullah leadership, knowing that work is afoot between the two teams, to arrange an urgent meeting soon between MP Saad Hariri and Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah".

"Informed sources in the opposition said, the existing atmospheres now signify positive willingness on the opposition's part, but participating in the government would not be at any price. If the 'March 14' group wants to «create a climate of calm with the Shiaa Amal-Hizbullah duo, the leadership of the latter utterly and completely refuses any dealing with the opposition as separate parts, which is braced for possible deception aimed at General Michel Aoun and the Christian of the opposition forces specifically», al-Akhbar told.

It concluded: "These circles said that discussions will be on the Christian representation of the opposition and that of the President of the Republic. Because the opposition would reject any attempt to give the President cabinet seats from its share, a matter resolved by General Aoun and Franjieh, meanwhile, Hizbullah shows readiness again to distribute its Cabinet quota among its allies in the opposition forces, particularly Aoun and the Syrian Socialist Nationalist Party (SSNP).
