LNOUSF: Medical Association Council committed a serious & legal offense by adopting a waiver decision
Local Editor, 6-11-2009
A statement was issued by the Lebanese National Opposition Union Sectors Forces (LNOUSF) regarding the Medical Association's decision to abandon the ‘House of the Doctor' issue.
The opposition's medical union sectors held a meeting to study the decision the Medical Association took at its last meeting to abandon the ‘House of the Doctor' issue and drop the related lawsuit made in that regard.
The following statement was issued at the conclusion of that meeting:
1. The meeting held by the different parties at the ‘House of the Doctor' under the claimed ‘reconciliation', according to which a law suit by the Medical Association was dropped, is but a blatant one-sided - the Council of the Medical Association - waiver, made under the guise of the deceptive claim of achieving illusory gains, which do not stand up to the scrutiny of facts and figures.
2. The Medical Association Council committed a serious regulatory and legal offense by adopting a waiver decision, in the process throwing out the General Assembly's decision requiring this issue be dealt with by resorting to the judicial system, and that this decision can only be reversed by a counter-decision made solely by the General Assembly itself, rather than by the Association Council, particularly since this decision affects all the interests of the doctors, medical staff and medical body.
3. We, the convened, hereby stress that the decision taken by the Association Council was caused by non-union pressures dictated onto all Association members, thus causing grave harm to the interests of the Medical Association, squandering its funds and targeting its credibility and related previous decisions, especially if we learn that such a waiver entails payment of additional expenses by the Medical Association directly from pockets of doctors rather than reclaiming their rights.
4. The opposition union forces condemn with the strongest terms this dangerous precedent, embodied in the exploitation of the presence of a certain majority within the Association Council, which proceeded to forfeit the Association's rights. This ‘majority' has not been trustworthy with the Association's funds and the respect of its decisions. We bring to mind that this case is not so outside the Association Council, where the medical body majority opposes the wavering of the doctors' financial rights and moral integrity.
5. The entire opposition union forces call on the entire medical body to strongly voice its discontent and reject the Association Council decision through available democratic means to pressure the Council back into its senses, and to concern itself with becoming indeed worthy of the level of trust it claims to represent.
