Iranian Nuclear Physicist Assassinated in Tehran
An Iranian nuclear physics professor was assassinated yesterday near his home in the Qeytarieh neighborhood of Tehran's northern district.
A terrorist group, The Iran Royal Association, an obscure monarchist group that seeks to reestablish the Pahlavi reign in Iran, announced in a statement that its "Tondar Commandos" were behind the assassination of Masoud Ali-Mohammadi. Announcing the killing, the website of the group said that they had previously threatened "the sell-out" with death.
Massoud Ali-Mohammadi was a particle physics professor at the prestigious Tehran University. He died instantly in the blast when a remote-controlled bomb planted in a motorcycle parked near his home exploded.
Tehran police sealed off the area and launched an investigation. Security officials were quoted as saying that the equipment and system of the bomb used in the attack had been related to a number of foreign intelligence agencies, particularly ‘Israel's' Mossad, Press TV reported.
Iran's Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the attack and said the role of ‘Israeli' and American agents is against all norms of international behavior. Primary investigations into the assassination show signs of the involvement of the Zionist regime the US and their minions in Iran," ministry spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast said in statement.
"Such cowardly moves will not affect Iran's pursuit of civilian nuclear technology", he noted.
"Professor Massoud Ali-Mohammadi ... was a prominent international figure, but had not been involved in any political activities," Head of the Science Complex of the University of Tehran Ali Moqari told Mehr News Agency on Tuesday. Mohammadi was known to be a staunch supporter of the Islamic Revolution.
The Iran Royal Association whose radio station broadcasts from the United States,is headed by Foroud Fouladvand. It is also responsible for a deadly bombing in the southern city of Shiraz back in April 2008, in which 13 people were killed and hundreds were wounded.
The terrorist attack came as Shahram Amiri, an Iranian nuclear scientist, went missing in the Saudi holy city of Medina while on a pilgrimage visit in June 2009. In December, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast said Tehran had information that authorities in Riyadh had delivered Amiri to the United States. He added that Amiri is among eleven Iranian nationals held in detention in US prisons
