“Israeli” Army Chief of Staff Oversees First Drill on Northern Front
The "Israeli" Army completed a vast drill Thursday enacted throughout the week, its first overseen by "Israeli" Army Chief of Staff Benny Gantz. The drill focused mainly on emergencies stemming from escalation of violence on the northern front. Gantz dealt during the drill with significant operational issues intended to simulate those he may encounter in a future war, said the Ynet news website.
The drill was planned according to scenarios and included a number of "surprises" from the enemy. General Gershon Hacohen, who supplied the data required for the drill, remarked that "the army uses the drill in order to promote working procedures and the formulation of new understanding".
The drill takes place annually, with soldiers, officers, and reserves participating. Combat procedures and cooperation between forces on land, air, and sea were tested, as well as auxiliary fields such as logistics, intelligence, public relations, and the home front.
In addition, the drill took into account cooperation with state leaders as well as lessons from former drills and wars, such as the Second Lebanon War and Operation Cast Lead.
Gantz, who made difficult decisions regarding operations during wartime and visited the different commands involved in order to hold meetings with army brass, said after the drill that "these drills are a consequence of reality, which forces us to maintain constant readiness".
On a related note, "Israeli" channel 2 military correspondent noted that the results of the maneuver demonstrate the difficulties "Israel" faces in confronting "dangers from Hizbullah and Syria" in any future war. Also, he pointed out that posts to launch around 45 thousand rockets exist in 260Lebanese villages, of which some rockets might reach Tel Aviv.
