Arab Ministers Urge Damascus to Sign Observing Mission’s Protocol
The Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi announced Thursday that the AL Ministerial Council called on the Syrian government to sign on Friday, the protocol related to sending an observing mission to Syria.
According to Agence France Presse, Arab diplomatic sources indicated that the "Arab Ministerial Committee that met in Cairo on Thursday, and which is concerned with the Syrian crisis, agreed on some amendments proposed by the Syrian government, to be applied on the special protocol of the observers to be sent to Syria".
Also, the sources added that this approval, which was led by an Algerian proposal, represents a compromise solution between the draft protocol adopted by the Arab Foreign Ministers, and the amendments suggested by Syria.
The same sources clarified that the compromise solution proposed by Algeria does not affect the core of the protocol, further affirming that the observing mission's task is to provide protection for the Syrian civilians.
Moreover, the Arab diplomatic sources confirmed that the AL Secretary General al-Arabi sent a warrant to Syria's delegation to the AL, requesting Deputy Foreign Minister Nabil al-Mokdad to sign the draft protocol between Syria and the AL.
The same sources said that the Syrian delegation at the AL informed the latter's General Secretariat that it will make a decision concerning signing the protocol, depending on what will be issued against Syria after the current AL meeting.
