An Iranian Army senior officer announced that the army has downed a remote-controlled US reconnaissance plane which was operating in the eastern part of Iran.

According to military sources, the Iranian Army's electronic warfare unit successfully targeted the American RQ-170 Sentinel stealth aircraft after violating the Lebanese airspace from over the Iran-Afghanistan borders.
The Iranian source affirmed that the US drone has been seized with minimum damage.

In this context, the Iranian military official stressed that "due to the clear border violation, the operational and electronic measures taken by the Islamic Republic of Iran's Armed Forces against invading aircraft will not remain limited to Iran's borders".
On another hand, in response to the Iranian announcement, NATO forces indicated that operators lost control of a surveillance drone flying over Afghanistan, saying it may be the same one Iran has downed.

In a statement, the International Security Assistance Force referred, "The UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] to which the Iranians are referring may be a US unarmed reconnaissance aircraft that has been flying a mission over western Afghanistan late last week. The operators of the UAV lost control of the aircraft and has been working to determine its status".
