Turkey: Not To Allow Launching Attacks against Syria, NATO: Not to Intervene Military
Turkey announced Wednesday that it would not let its territory be used to launch attacks against other countries.
This comes as Syria declared Tuesday that its authorities succeeded in foiling a "terrorist" group attempting to infiltrate from the Turkish border.
"Turkey is not allowing any armed groups to launch attacks against other countries," a Turkish diplomat told AFP, when asked about the Syrian news reports.
In parallel, military and political officials in NATO denied the coalition intention of any intervention in Syria stressing that there "are no plans to do so."
In statements to UAE "Gulf" newspaper, NATO official clarified that "Turkey is a member of the "NATO "and a neighbor to Syria," adding that "so far, Ankara did not consult with the NATO in this regard."
Confirming that "NATO is not yet mandated to act against Syria," the official emphasized that "the coalition won't act except in accordance with a specific mandate."
"The alliance is not an international policeman," he added without denying a similar NATO's role in the future.
Another official said told the UAE paper that "I would like to announce that the NATO has no plans to intervene in Syria, there is no country in the alliance that wants to interfere in Syria."
He continued by saying "I would like to make it clear that any member in NATO could take a military action without requesting permission from the alliance. However, if one of the NATO's members is attacked, NATO might intervene."
