Al-Assad: We Don’t Fear Sanctions, Many Attempts to Distort Syrian Facts
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad stressed that the threat of sanctions doesn't worry him, saying that "we've been under sanctions for the last 30, 35 years. It's not something new."
Denying all fabricated news that he ordered the killing of thousands of civilian protesters, al-Assad confirmed that "only a crazy person would target his own people."
In an interview with "ABC" channel, the Syrian President brushed off widening international sanctions and questioned the UN announced death toll revealing that "most victims were government supporters."
"We don't kill our people," "ABC" quoted al-Assad as saying. "No government in the world kills its people, unless it's led by a crazy person."
"There was no command to kill or be brutal," al-Assad said noting that "the Syrian government received no documents or evidence pertaining to what the report described as crimes against humanity committed in Syria."
Al-Assad clarified that "there are many attempts to distort facts about what is happening in Syria and false accusations," stressing "the need to verify the authenticity of the images and reports broadcast about Syria."
In response to a question on whether he believed that his forces used exaggerated force against protestors, President al-Assad said "the forces in Syria aren't my forces; they are military forces that belong to the homeland and nobody owns them."
