US occupation to Iraq is set to officially end Thursday, with War Secretary Leon Panetta flying into Baghdad to attend a ceremony formally wrapping up the US military's eight and a half years of occupation in Iraq.

The US flag is to be lowered in Baghdad as the ceremony effectively ends the occupation two weeks earlier than was necessary under the terms of the security agreement which stipulated that the troops must be gone by Dec. 31.

Trying to hide aspects of his troops defeat, US President Barack Obama claimed that "the US left behind a sovereign, stable and self-reliant Iraq."

Some 4,500 US soldiers and more than 100,000 Iraqis have died along the occupation that coasted US some $1tr.

In a speech to troops just returned from Iraq in North Carolina on Wednesday, Obama hailed the "extraordinary achievement of the military as they were leaving with heads held high."
