Damascus to Sign AL Protocol, Halt Crisis Internationalization
After news about "optimistic" Arab League (AL) signs that Syria will be signing the observer protocol by Monday, media outlets confirmed this step as part of the Syrian administration's attempt, to halt internationalization of the country's crisis.
According to Beirut-based as-Safir newspaper, the Syrian leadership decided to sign the protocol, which enables an observer mission to enter the Syrian territories easily, by that highlighting a first step into implementing the Arab initiative.
This comes after Qatari Prime Minister Hamad bin Jassem al-Thani announced that the AL is willing to request a UN Security Council adoption of the resolutions and sanctions issued on Syria's behalf.
In this context, diplomatic sources noted to the Lebanese daily that Syria will be signing the observer protocol in the upcoming hours in Cairo. Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al-Moqdad will be the official envoy to sign the deal. The same sources confirmed that the Syrian step was to set "obstacles before notorious Arab countries' attempts to internationalize the Syrian crisis, and prepare a military attack against Damascus".
Also, signing the protocol illustrates Syria's desire to contain its crisis' way out in the AL, clearly expressing concern over the Arab-Arab relations.
