Despite recent attempts by Ankara to prevent its decision, the French parliament approved a draft law in which it criminalizes any denial of the 1915 Armenian genocide that occurred in the era of the Ottoman Empire.

The said approval triggered outraged reactions on different level in Turkey. On its part, the Turkey government considered that this law represents a smack on the developed relations with France, and announced it will withdraw its Ambassador from Paris.
In this context, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyeb Erdogan declared a group of measures including halting military maneuvers and cooperation programs with France, in addition to blocking all French ships from entering Turkish ports.

Also, the Turkish measures include annulling the annual approval for French Planes' landing in Turkish airports, and canceling all meetings schedules for bilateral economic ministers.
Moreover, Erdogan indicated that this step is only the first in a series of other economic and political measures which Ankara will be adopting on behalf of Paris, adding that the measures will be announced in accordance with the developments of the French stance.

Apparently, the aforementioned sabotaged a consensus and cooperation between both countries regarding the Syrian crisis, for some Turkish officials are expecting that one of their country's sanctions would include halting all cooperation with Paris on the Syrian issue.

On this level, the so called Syrian Opposition Gathering in the Istanbul Council led by Burhan Ghalyoun, would be affected by this change of circumstances, especially that the Istanbul Council was formed on the basis of a Turkish-French consensus.
