US Seals $3.48 Billion Weapons Deal with UAE
The US has signed a deal to sell over three billion dollars worth of missiles and technology to the United Arab Emirates, its close ally in the Middle East.
This comes as part of a massive buildup of defense technology among US friendly Mideast nations which, according to the US does not constitute a threat on "Israel".
Pentagon spokesman George Little announced on Friday night that the US and UAE are close allies, and have a strong "defense" relation, claiming both countries' interest in a "secure and stable" Persian Gulf region.
In depth, the arms deal includes 96 missiles, in addition to supporting technology and training support. The Pentagon spokesman noted that the said deal would certainly boost the UAE's defense capacities.
Moreover, the deal sealed includes a contract with Lockheed Martin Company that produces the highly sophisticated Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) weapon system for the UAE.
According to the program manager of Lockheed Martin's THAAD program, Tom McGarth, the aforementioned deal was the first foreign military sale of the THAAD system to be implemented.
The US is increasingly building up defense systems in its allies' territories, seeking Iran's besiege. Also, deal with Arab allies included a $1.7 billion deal to improve Saudi Arabia's Patriot missiles, while $900 million worth 209 Patriot missiles were sold to Kuwait.
Earlier this week, the US [Barack] Obama administration declared it will be selling $30 billion worth F-15SA fighter jets to Saudi Arabia; i.e. the US will send the Gulf-based country 84 new fighter jets, while 70 others would be upgraded.
