United Syrian Opposition: West’s failing Bet
As parts of the conspiracy against Syria are being uncovered day after day, the western attempt to form a strong opposition coalition against the regime is proving to be a failing bet.
Under the title, "Syria Opposition Struggles to Stay United", the UK's famous
newspaper "Daily Telegraph" uncovered that Syria's opposition was in disarray Wednesday, struggling to present a united front.
As nine months have passed on the Syrian crisis, the paper stated that "Western powers have repeatedly called for the Syrian opposition to put aside differences and join forces in their bid to oust President Bashar al-Assad."
In reflection to Western and particularly US interference in Damascus internal affairs the paper uncovered that "stepping up its involvement, the United States sent Jeffrey Feltman, the assistant secretary of state for Near East Affairs, to Cairo overnight for consultations with the Arab League about Syria."
" A pact that two of Syria's main opposition factions - the Syrian National Council (SNC) and National Coordination Body for Democratic Change in Syria (NCB) - agreed last week now appears to be in tatters," the "Daily Telegraph" explained describing the opposition's situation as "making matters worse."
Mentioning that the so-called "SNC ...has been at odds with some activists over the extent of foreign intervention required to bring change," the UK's daily quoted Michel Kilo as saying:
"SNC refuses to accept the existence of other opposition forces and rejects the formation of a committee to lead the common work of the different opposition groups."
In the same context, "Financial Times" highlighted Thursday that "attempts to
\forge a coalition between Syrian opposition groups appear to have collapsed."
Reflecting that "the opposition creates a dilemma for western governments
seeking to deal with a unified voice opposed to President Bashar al-Assad," "FT" clarified that "the difficulty in forging a single opposition umbrella prompts questions about how the protest movement can develop into a (Future) government."
"Many observers are concerned by the SNC's apparent failure to build the mechanisms to make authoritative pronouncements on the strategic decisions facing the opposition," the daily stressed.
"At the end of the day, it's a series of competing views within the council, rather than them having an established mechanism for deciding what the position of the SNC should be," said a western diplomat.
