Hundreds of Saudis protested Friday in the eastern Saudi city of Qatif against the repressive policies of the regime and the deterioration of social conditions.

Under the slogan "Central Frees' Earthquake", the demonstration toured the city's
 streets.

The movement also included visiting the families of martyrs and expressing solidarity with the honorable.

The demonstrators raised slogans advocating the demands of the Bahraini people to achieve their rights.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed alarm over the growing use of capital punishment in Saudi Arabia, saying the number of executions jumped from 29 in 2010 to at least 70 last year.

"We are alarmed at the significant increase in the use of the death penalty in Saudi Arabia in 2011," Spokesman Rupert Colville told a regular press briefing in Geneva Friday.

Colville said "the wide range of offenses for which the death penalty is pronounced was particularly troubling."

Considering that "Saudi Arabia's growing use of the death penalty goes against an international trend for fewer executions," he added that "UN human rights office also criticizes the frequent use of inhuman double amputation for offenses."
