"Israeli" government broke all its settlement-building records in 2011, diminishing prospects for establishing a viable Palestinian state in the occupied West Bank.
The annual report published by "Israeli" "Peace Now" group showed that despite international calls to halt settlement construction, thousands of new settlements were being built.

"In 2011, "Israeli" Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu broke his government's building records and turned it into a very fruitful year for the settlers," the report mentioned.

"Peace Now" uncovered that "2011 witnessed a 20 percent increase in settlement construction and about 35 percent of 1,850 settlement unit starts were on land beyond a separation barrier "Israel" is erecting, which is expected to demarcate Palestinian areas."

Noting that "building was also underway on another 3,500 houses already begun and it listed continuing work in 142 settlements," the report added that "much of the building was intended for religious "Israelis" who cite biblical links to the land."

In a separate report on Tuesday, the United Nations humanitarian affairs unit said five Palestinian were killed and 1,000 injured by settlers or security forces in incidents related to the settlements during the year.
Two children were among those killed, and nearly a fifth of all injuries were suffered by under-18s, UN OCHA said.

Palestinian government spokesman Ghassan Khatib said "Peace Now's" figures were proof of the accuracy of their warnings about settlements.
"The report shows the credibility and seriousness of the Palestinian warnings to world," the spokesman said.
