Iran Launches Major Naval Drills in Hormuz

Iran's Revolutionary Guard began Saturday naval drills near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the oil strait that Iran has threatened to close in retaliation for oil sanctions or military attacks.
Plans for new Iranian month-long drills in the Gulf have been in the works for weeks. But they got under way following clear warnings by Supreme Leader Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei, about any possible US or "Israeli" attacks against Iran .
According to the Commander of the IRGC Ground Forces Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour, the war games are aimed at maintaining and enhancing readiness of the IRGC units, demonstrating the degree of their readiness in handling threats and enhancing expert performance and professional skills of the forces.
Last month, Iran's navy wrapped up 10 days of exercises in the Gulf, but the Revolutionary Guard represents a significantly stronger military force and controls key programs such as missile development.
Iranian state media announced the new maneuvers, but gave no further details.
