Russia, China Veto UN Draft Resolution on Syria
Russia and China vetoed on Saturday a UN draft resolution backing the Arab plan, which calls on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down.

Both countries joined in a double veto against the US-backed UN Security Council resolution, which claims better transitions into democracy.
On its part, Russia stated that the said draft resolution was an improper and biased attempt at "regime change" in Syria, which is considered to be its major Middle East ally, Reuters reported.
Moscow's ambassador to the UNSC Vitaly Churkin confirmed that the international community should not meddle in Syria's internal crisis, reiterating his countries opposition of any possible sanctions imposed on the Syrian regime.
Moreover, he added that any sanctions, along with foreign interference, might rather augment the crisis in the Syria.
The double veto caused outrage among the US and European council members.
In this context, US Ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice claimed that "The US disgusted that a couple of members of this Council continue to prevent us from fulfilling our sole purpose".
"For months, the council has been held hostage by a couple of members", she added.
