Hague: Britain Supported Syrian Rebels, Calls China, Britain to Follow Lead
The British Foreign Minister William Hague urged Russia and China to support a new UN Security Council resolution against Syria, claiming that both countries' previous opposition on a similar resolution caused them a "diplomatic price".
According to a Washington Post report on Thursday, Hague claimed that Russia and China's veto of the Western-Arab anti-Syria draft resolution at the UNSC, incurred them "a diplomatic price" across the Arab world.
Hague's remarks came after British Prime Minister David Cameron vowed in an address at the House of Commons' Liaison Committee on Tuesday, that Britain would continue to secure an anti-Syria UNSC resolution.
Moreover, Cameron admitted that Britain played a key role in assisting the Syrian armed rebels, stating that his country "has already provided an extra £2 million to the agencies operating on the ground".
Right after Russia and China vetoed the Western-Arab draft resolution, William Hague called for Britain's contact with Syria's armed rebels to be intensified and speculations went viral that Britain would supply Syria's terror gangs with arms, intelligence, and direct tactical support.
Later, reports published by the "Israeli" website Debka-file, known for its links with intelligence sources, revealed that Britain's intelligence agency, MI6, established four centers of operation in the Syrian city of Homs with the troops on the ground opening the way for Turkey to carry out a secret military incursion into Syria.
The reports were followed by Hague's recognition of Syria's armed rebels as a "legitimate representative" of the Syrian nation.
Earlier this month, Britain's Foreign and Commonwealth office also released a statement saying Britain withdrew all political staff from Syria.
After the Syrian army took full control of a key terrorist stronghold in Homs, Turkey said it was against a military intervention in Syria and Hague said Britain had no plans for supporting armed rebels inside Syria.
Meanwhile, Britain's determination to "secure a United Nations Security Council resolution" against Syria, as described by Cameron, comes as Russia has dismissed the west's hopes for a change in its stance on Syria as "wishful thinking."
