Al-Makdisi: Syria Encourages Political Resolution, Opposition Delays Dialogue
Syrian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Jihad al-Makdisi confirmed that "Syria encourages and supports a political resolution, because this is what we've been wanting since the beginning of the crisis in Syria".
In an interview with al-Intiqad online newspaper, al-Makdisi indicated, "When the events started in March 15 last year, the Syrian state launched, within only 6 days on March 21, the first reform package".

"This was until the confrontations developed and the movement became armed, therefore the state was obliged to tackle the security side of the movement in order to maintain stability with adhering to the political horizon and the reform path", al-Makdisi stated.
Moreover, al-Makdisi asserted, "Syria seeks solution and dialogue, and it welcomes any initiative for resolving [the crisis]".
He also added that Syria is after a political solution, which is also the demand of most of the Syrian people; whether in the supporting team, opposition, or independent parties.
"We have received Kofi Annan and others of international envoys, and if these diplomatic efforts aim at helping Syria, then each one of us will exert positive cooperation until the very end. Yet if these efforts aim at pressuring and destabilizing Syria, then we are not willing to implement un-national agendas that don't serve the nature of our country", al-Makdisi iterated.
Regarding the five-point paper issued by the Arab Foreign Ministers' meeting, in presence of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Cairo, the Syrian Foreign Ministry Spokesman added, "We are still studying all the point and initiatives presented, and the current atmosphere appears to be positive, despite insecure intentions of some [Arab] countries".
In addition, al-Makdisi noted that the government is not the one causing the delay of dialogue, affirming that fingers should be pointed at those who oppose an inclusive national dialogue.
"When Russia presented its dialogue initiative, we accepted it without any restrictions, because the country needs dialogue. But the foreign opposition refused to take part in dialogue under several pretexts that do not promote to a level that would want to save the country", he added.
"Any solution that relies on a virtual reality or on toppling the regime will not succeed, and the best way is to sit on one table and reach a renewing Syria, which all Syrians seek to build", he reiterated.
Also, al-Makdisi stressed that "Syria is only in line for maintaining Syria's stability and security; this is the Syrian political compass", adding that his country's regime vows to continue the reform path until the very end, having no fear what so ever of any democratic merit.
