UNSC Adopts Statement Backing Annan’s Mission to Syria
In parallel, the Security Council condemned in a press statement the "latest terrorist bombings which took place in Damascus and Aleppo."
Russia, China, and Western powers reached Wednesday a joint position on Syria with the endorsement of a UN Security Council statement.

The presidential statement, which carried less weight than a formal Western draft resolution, gave strong backing to a six-point plan that UN envoy Kofi Annan proposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad this month.
The council called on "the Syrian government and opposition to work in good faith with the envoy towards a peaceful settlement of the Syrian crisis and to implement fully and immediately his initial six-point proposal."
Speaking at a news conference in Berlin shortly before the statement was agreed on, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made clear that "Moscow supported the amended text."
After meetings with German officials in Berlin, Lavrov said "the council's text reflects the reality in Syria and supports Annan's aims."
The Russian FM confirmed that "the most important thing is that there are no ultimatums...and no suggestions as to who carries more blame."
"In light of the fact that there are armed sides that fight the government, it is not probable to rely on the UNSC to ask the governmental forces withdraw from the main cities without taking similar steps by the opposition," Lavrov stressed.
In the same context, Russian ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin affirmed "his country's stance on the Syrian crisis didn't change."
He also added that "this stance reflects our vision and understanding to the need of halting all forms of violence, bringing all Syrians together to dialogue and supporting the political process which is led by the Syrians."
For her part, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton welcomed the statement as a "positive step," warning "al-Assad that he will face increasing pressure if he did not implement the peace plan."
