Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro has said his country would consider an asylum application from the American whistleblower former CIA contractor Edward Snowden.
"We say and advocate that someone in the world should stand with this young man and protect him, the revelations he has made with courage serve to change the world," he said on state television from Haiti during an official visit.

"We have not received an official request. But in the event we were to receive one, we would evaluate it as we understand Ecuador is doing," Maduro said, adding that "in every case, asylum is a humanitarian protection".

Maduro, the handpicked heir of Hugo Chavez, who was declared winner of a disputed election in April, shares his predecessor's distrust of Washington.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had stated on Tuesday that the former CIA contractor Edward Snowden remains in the transit zone of a Moscow airport, which he arrived to on Sunday, adding that he never crossed the Russian border and doesn't fall under any extradition treaty.

"Snowden is a free person. The sooner he chooses his final destination, the better it is for him and Russia," Putin further commented.
