US Officials: Al-Qaeda Might Have Developed Liquid Explosive, Leave Yemen Immediately
Local Editor
Senior US officials expressed concerns that al-Qaeda may have developed a liquid explosive that could be undetectable under security systems as the State Department ordered nationals to leave Yemen immediately.
The liquid explosive is said to be dipped onto ordinary clothing, becoming explosive when dry, according to two senior government officials briefed on the terror threat that has prompted the closure of nearly two dozen US embassies and consulates.
Moreover, another senior official has said that it may not be detectable under current security measures.
An official spokesperson in the Transportation Security Administration said in this regards, "I am not in a position to discuss any intelligence around this current threat. But, as a general matter, TSA screens both passengers and carry-on baggage for metallic and non-metallic prohibited items, including weapons and explosives. To do this, TSA uses the best available imaging technology to safely screen passengers for any concealed items."
This pushed the US Department of State along with other countries to close over 20 embassies and consulates in North Africa and the Middle East and issue a travel alert last week.
Moreover, the US State Department on Tuesday ordered all non-essential embassy staff out of Yemen.
The Department further urged US nationals to leave the country immediately over terrorism concerns, according to AFP.
