Obama: al-Qaeda “Hammered”, Terror Threat Real
Local Editor
United States President Barack Obama stressed on Wednesday that al-Qaeda's leaders were on the ropes, but confessed that the threats that have closed US embassies across the Middle East and North Africa are indeed real.
Delivering a speech to around 3,000 Marines at Camp Pendleton military base in California, Obama believed that "Because of you [troops], al-Qaeda's top ranks have been hammered."
However, Obama stated that intelligence about a possible attack must be dealt with.
"Here's what those who would cowardly attack our civilians don't get: The United States is never going to retreat from the world," he said.
On Tuesday, the US State Department ordered all non-essential embassy staff out of Yemen.
The Department further urged US nationals to leave the country immediately over terrorism concerns, according to AFP.
The US as well as European countries earlier last week had issued a travel alert and closed over 20 US diplomatic missions in the Middle East and Africa over an al-Qaeda threat on Western targets in the areas.
Intercepted communiques between al-Qaeda leadership and its affiliated branch in Yemen have showed evidence to plots against American and Western targets on the Arabian Peninsula, which explains the reason behind closing over 19 embassies and consulates and the travel alert.
Yemen had confirmed on Wednesday that it had foiled an al-Qaeda plot to storm a Western-run oil terminal and seize a provincial capital.
