Army Commander General Michel Sleiman said he does not want to be a "confrontational" candidate for the presidency, but that he wants his candidacy to be consensual and endorsed by national agreement.
Sleiman's visitors quoted him as saying that he would not accept being elected with a simple-majority vote.
"I have informed all political and spiritual leaders I have met with that I would resign from my post as army commander if a president is elected with a simple majority, even before my presidential candidacy was discussed," Sleiman told his visitors.
"I will not accept being elected with a simple-majority vote, especially now that I have been named as a consensus candidate," he added.
Sleiman also called for awareness about the risks endangering Lebanon's security and stability.
"I refuse for my name to be discussed in the context of decisions that do not serve civil peace," Sleiman said.
