At least 20 Lebanese nationals, some of them from Qabeet in the north Lebanon region of Akkar, drowned after a boat carrying 80 people sank in Indonesia, while it was on its way to Australia.

Municipality Head of Qabeet town told al-Ahed news that more than 20 Lebanese are missing so far.

According to the Lebanese embassy, the boat carrying 80 migrants from different nationalities sank earlier Friday, 12 hours by boat off the coast of Indonesia on the way to Australia.

Indonesian authorities informed the Lebanese Embassy in Jakarta that rescue teams have "so far pulled out 15 dead people, the sources said.
Among those identified, according to the Qabeet official are: Hussein Ahmad Khodor and his family, Mohamad Ali Assad and his family, Hussein Abu Nasr and his family, Mohamad Khodor Shdid and Manal Ali Hamzeh.

The embassy also stated that search and rescue operations are still on the go.
Al-Manar TV reported that 3 Lebanese have been rescued. One survivor told sources he had paid 12 million Lebanese pounds to travel to Australia on the ferry, and summoned the Lebanese embassy in Indonesia to help him and the other Lebanese nationals who were on board.
